Hey seniors :)

yes there's plenty of traditions, they're silly, they're weird, but they're unique, OURS and are to be proud of :)

do i think traditions are important? in some ways yes. threats and dangers define the identity of the society, traditions and culture shape the essence; inescapable even in societies the shape of a class :) (no citations unfortunately, i'm lazy haha) and hence my normative stance over these years :)

okayy lets try to summarise what we remember lol...

1) champagne popping. after campfire, grandseniors (if not around, seniors) get the two bottles of sparkling wine, ct reps pop em haha. + speech by anyone who wants to speak of course, tts usually the initiation by the grand seniors, but seniors can give them the welcome too :)

2) cheer! it was produced by 00s60, which was a LEP (chinese) class :p it goes like this...

4) class diary haha. u pass that around during school and scribble. offline blog, in a sense. if not used, and u haven't lost it, it's good to pass it on too! :) def find it more meaningful than buying a new one; the previous classes always lose the diary (or it gets stolen heh!)

5) grand seniors also bring juniors out for dinner as part of class building, even the days after campfire :)

songs for the past few years have been handled by the 02 six-oh guitarists lol. any guitarist wishes to take up the mantle? i've the guitar chords for the school songs, scanned in jpg format :)

other traditions, of course, involve having fun, crashing (more or less uniquely 60 now :S), class birthday :)

pls pls pls go crash 2008 and uphold the tradition of even years being generally MUCH more enthu :) -hides from 05 XD- muchly important, it's up to ur class (or some select idealistic individuals) to decide whether to continue for the next lap. we hope you all would decide this mantle of traditions worthy of carrying on :)

any new traditions created in lieu of older ones, or as addendums to this list, is definitely good too! :) make a cheer, make a official class dance, etc lol.

Oh dear. I am talking to Tai An now, our sixoh senior from godknows when (:P) Apparently, there are a LOT of sixoh traditions we have to pass down. ):

1) champagne popping (after orientation)
2) the class cheer (which i totally cannot remember
3) the class song (whose existence is suspect in my memory.)

I know we're not a class big on traditions. And I know (from experience) that receiving these traditions are a little silly sometimes. But I'm in two minds about discontinuing them. Here's the debate:

THIS HOUSE WOULD CONTINUE THE SIXOH TRADITIONS

PROPOSITION: 1) they -are- traditions, and they are not for us to discontinue 2) Everyone needs something to come home to, and even if they don't feel for the various songs/cheers, I think the juniors (as all people do), would appreciate knowing that there are people (the long history of sixoh) that are willing to come back and see that they survive. 3) it's not what we do that matters, but the spirit of trying to keep things alive 4) we have no better way of receiving the juniors.

OPPOSITION:
1) Do we really identify with these traditions? 2) Who's willing to do all these? Are the juniors willing to receive all these? 3) some of you are rolling your eyes already.

it is easy to mistake blood diamond for yet another hollywood blockbuster because it resembled one in too many ways. like always, the script was lacklustre and dry, but was fortunately saved by stellar performances from (some say) dicaprio and (i say) hounsou. special effects dominated as usual, and although the sequences were long and repetitive, they combined to evoke a powerful blend of emotions. the movie brought the audience into the civil war right away (with the chopping of arms and a street massacre), before desensitising the audience with repeated footages of violence and shocking immorality. at the end, hounsou stares deeply into our ignorance and apathy, and it is in his conviction and resignation that i started to tear. the movie is fast-paced and nailbiting, with plenty of drama that carries the audience through waves and waves of tensions. at crucial junctures, dicaprio reminds us that 'this is africa', and the audience finds no place for hope amidst the worsening chaos.

many mistake such movies as hollywood preachiness, but i would beg to differ here. zwick does not moralise but is consistent with his 'this is africa' tagline throughout. the characters actively challenge each other's beliefs (for sex, money and hope) and remain defiantly independent till the closing scenes. the best thing about the movie is its ability to enlarge its scope beyond conflict diamonds and africa. above all, it was about the tensions between the individual, the family, the state and some say the system.
